There are main 3 types of mesothelioma cancer. Pleural mesothelioma that affect the outer membrane of the lungs. Peritoneal mesothelioma that affect the peritoneum. Pericardial mesothelioma that affect the pericardium.

The types of mesothelioma cancer is can be divided to three malignant types according to the affected organ in the body and a benign type in which the tumors are not malignant.

1- Pleural mesothelioma: the most common type of mesothelioma cancer that affect the lung lining (Pleura) and cause shortness of breath and chest pain and related to exposure to asbestos. Pleural mesothelioma symptoms take about 35 years to appear, and when they appears they will be very similar to the symptoms of other disease, that will make the diagnosis of that type of cancer very hard.

2- Peritoneal mesothelioma: In this type of mesothelioma, tumors develop in the outer lining surrounds the internal organs of abdomen (peritoneum), this type of cancer is also related to exposure to asbestos. Symptoms of that type of cancer take from 20 to 50 years to appear, abdominal swelling, general weakness, and abdomen pain are some of peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms.

3- Pericardial mesothelioma: The least common type of mesothelioma cancer, in this case of mesothelioma the tumors affect the heart lining (Pericardium) and it's often related to exposure to asbestos. Scientists can't know exactly how Asbestos can reach the pericardium "the sac that contains the heart", Asbestos may move from the lungs to the heart "after inhalation of Asbestos" through the blood stream.

Benign mesothelioma is the non cancerous form of mesothelioma, in this case of mesothelioma just the non malignant tumors can develop in the lung lining (pleura).
